Before & After // Painted Dining Room Floor

July 28, 2016

Remember when I said is was going to paint my dining room floor? Well, I did it....

In case you forgot what it looked like let me refresh your memory.  Now I know there are more that a few hardwood purest out there and I respect that but my rationale is solid, let me explain.

Way back when we did our kitchen reno we went through the unpleasant process of refinishing the floors in the kitchen and I wasn't super happy with the results. So, there I was stuck with newly refinished kitchen floors that I didn't love and dingy dining room floors in desperate need of some love. Also, like a crazy genius, I decided to go with a dark stain in the kitchen and hallway so the rest of the unfinished floors didn't even come close to matching, so leaving things alone was not an option.

Enter my best friend paint. People, I thrive under challenging circumstances, in fact, I think trouble-shooting in a real space is where real creativity and design happens.  I literally decided to white wash the issue with paint. In this image,  you can see that I haven't yet painted the kitchen floors.

I've always been super inspired by the painted floors that designers like Mary Mcdonald use.  I decided to give my dining room a little extra love with a fun pattern. If you want to know more about that check out this post.

To get started I sanded the floors with 60 grit sand paper to remove the top layer of the finish and give the primer something to stick to. Next, I washed the floors with a mild detergent and water to remove the dust that was left behind by the sanding.

Once the floor was dry, I gave them 2 coats of primer. I used Zinsser primmer  because of its excellent adhesion properties and it drys pretty quickly. I ended up liking the white of the primer but if "Zinsser White" is not your thing now is the time to give your floor a coat of paint.

Next, I used a pencil and straight edge to lay out my pattern and started painting it in.  To finish off the pattern, I gave my floor a top coat of poly for extra protection.

in case your curious I used Porch & Patio Floor Paint ( Behr Flintridge PFC-42, Storm PFC-64, Tar Black PFC-75, Pacific Fog PFC-62 in mat Finish) for a full list of supplies and a few pro tips on this project visit the One Kings Lane Style Blog  where I wrote about the processes in more detail.
